Not Just Anything is a collection of music that stems from a love of grooves, odd metres and sound design that is shared by bassist Shaun Johannes and percussionist Ronan Skillen. This album is the result of a collaboration that has been brewing between the musicians in the nearly two decades that they have been playing music together as sidemen or band members.
The album is a musical illustration of the feelings the artists experienced in the period before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, while also being a celebration of them finally embarking on a journey into music that draws heavily upon their mutual love for improvisational composition and the world music genre.
The album was supported by SAMRO’s MCSF grant (2021), which allowed Johannes and Skillen to write and record music during an otherwise sombre period due to the scourge of COVID-19.
